I have used a range of equipment over the different projects I have worked on. When filming the Ireland documentary "Teenage Kicks", I used a canon 1200D, with a zoom 18-55mm zoom lens, standard tripod and a shotgun microphone, this setup helped me have good mobility as it was easy to set up and move around which was important as I was heading up and down the coast and over uneven rocks and terrain. There was not need for lighting as it was all outdoors and supposed to be natural. Syncing the audio to the video was not too challenging as I would often clap at the start of a take to give me a reference point to sync the audio with the video playback. I would tweak the camera settings according to the shot I was taking, if the sun was out and my image was over exposed I would lower the exposure slightly. I deliberately opened my documentary with the wide shots of the coast to set the scene while grabbing the viewers attention.
Post production was not too intensive in terms of VFX or colour grading as I wanted to to all look natural and didn't need to enhance it in post. The biggest challenge was getting the flow of the film correct and ordering all the shots, which took me many edits to figure out.
When filming the music video, we were filming in one location with lots of set up time so I was able to use a Canon 1200D with a 18-55mm zoom lens mounted on a slider, this allowed me to get smooth shots sweeping across or towards the band. The shots on the slider helped give a sense of movement to the music video making it more interesting and engaging. We used 2 LED lights, one with a blue filter and the other with a purple filter to give the video an artistic style. Seeing as the music video was shot in a controlled environment with very clear and deliberate lighting the camera settings did not have to be tweaked once we had set them. We were not going to use any of the audio from recording the band on set for the music video as we already had a high quality recording of the song, but we did need to use the on set audio to sync the video with the track. Using a clapper helped sync the audio and keep track of the shots while on set and logging the footage after.
There was not need more colour grading as we lit our scenes to how we wanted them to look. There was some visual effects to give an unreal and out of body feel to sections of the song, this was mostly done by duplicating the footage multiple times, flipping some of the layers, offsetting the footage and lowering the opacity so show all the layers at once.
I have worked on a short film documentary, music video, animation, film trailer and radio piece in my time at college which has taught me a range of skills involved with the different styles and formats. I want to focus on narrative filming over summer and at my time in university creating short films and eventually working on feature length productions. My show reel shows a range of projects and genres I have worked on which reflects how I want to learn and practise a range of roles and positions on a production to gain as much experience and knowledge as possible. For projects like the documentary and radio piece it was all done by me so I had to carry out every role in the production while in the music video I was the cinematographer.
Evaluation
I like the pacing of my music video as I feel non of the projects linger for too long and that they show enough of each project to so what its about and the type of project it is. I feel my show reel shows a good range of projects I have worked on and displays my ability and practise I have gained while on the college course. I do feel that it could have been cut together better with some more appropriate music as I feel the music track does not completely suit the projects I am showing but for the purpose of a quick, upbeat show reel it does the job. The show reel would display my filming capability better if I would have had a narrative project I could have displayed as I don't have any fiction in there currently. This is something I will focus on over summer as I feel its the biggest area I could improve in.
